A few days ago, the British media BBC counted Premier League players who unfortunately became "007". This insulting title is aimed at attacking players who have neither scored goals nor contributed assists in the first seven games of the new club.
The meme originated in 2021, when a chart from Sky Sports in Germany brought Sancho, who had just joined Manchester United, into a James Bond-style suit, with the caption "They called me 007-0 goals and 0 assists 7 games." Sancho moved from Dortmund to Manchester United for £73 million after months of transfer rumors.
Liverpool signed £116.5 million this summer and became the latest target to be ridiculed. He neither scored nor assisted in the first seven Premier League games. However, Wilz contributed one assist in his debut in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace in August (Liverpool lost in that game).
Cunha, who transferred from Wolves to Manchester United for £62.5 million this summer, also won the title of "007". His teammate Shishko (transfer fee of £74m) narrowly avoided the now terrifying label, scoring in Game 6 in a 1-3 loss to Brentford.
Everton striker Tirno Barry (transfer from Villarreal) also has no goals or assists this season.
Many Premier League stars have had precedents of having a bad start at the new club but ultimately achieving great success, including Henry. Henry scored his first goal in 1999 in eight games, and eventually scored 175 Premier League goals in the Premier League and won the Golden Boot Award four times.
Cunha also became "007" during the Wolves' period, but he achieved a counterattack, scoring 33 goals in three seasons with the Wolves.
