In hot summers, it is common for dogs to experience dehydration. So do you know what to do if your dog is dehydrated? What are the causes of dog dehydration? Next, let’s take a look at the treatment for dog dehydration.
1. Causes of dog dehydration
1. Dog dehydration caused by food that is too salty or too spicy.
2. Dehydration caused by insufficient daily water consumption of dogs.
3.Diseases such as diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and ulcers in dogs can all lead to dehydration.
4. Long-term strenuous exercise, long-term exposure to the sun.
2. Symptoms of dehydration in dogs
1. Limbs are weak, skin is loose, and in severe cases, eyes are collapsed or swollen. Dehydration caused by frequent diarrhea requires rehydration as soon as possible.
2. Hair removal, poor mental health, darkening of the hair color.
3. The dog has lost appetite or is abandoned.
4. The dog's nose, foot pads, and skin are all dry.
If you suspect your dog is dehydrated, take it to your doctor immediately. Of course, you can also do a simple test. Gently pinch the skin on the dog's neck or shoulders with your hands. If it returns to its original state soon, the dog will not be short of water. If the recovery is slow, the dog may experience symptoms of dehydration.
3. Treatment of dehydration for dogs
Rehydration: sick dogs mostly die from dehydration, so rehydration is the main measure to treat this disease. Determine the ingredients and amount of fluid to be added according to the degree of dehydration and general conditions of the dog. Generally, intravenous fluid is 60ml/kg body weight.
Intravenous fluid: 5-40ml of 25% glucose solution, 2-10ml of vitamin C, 5-20ml of energy mixture, slow intravenous drip once, 1-2 times a day.
5% sugar salt 50-500 ml, vitamin C2-10 ml, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) injection 0.5-2 ml, 5% sodium bicarbonate 50-100 ml, hepatobiotics, etc. , administered by slow intravenous infusion twice a day.
Oral rehydration method: When the dog does not eat, the heart rate increases rapidly. If you have no vomiting and have appetite or desire to drink water, you can give the dog oral rehydration salt, 3.5g sodium chloride, 2.5g sodium bicarbonate, 1.5g potassium chloride, 20g glucose, 1000ml of water, free drinking or deep enema.
Anti-inflammatory: Various broad-spectrum antibiotics can be used, but do not use them for a long time to avoid intestinal microbiota disorders and delay the recovery of intestinal digestive function. Anti-toxic spirit freeze-dried powder and antitoxin No. 1 injection (produced by the No. 1 Veterinary Pharmaceutical Factory in Heilongjiang Province) have good efficacy on the disease. Generally, lyophilized powder is intravenously dripped with dogs below 15kg, 1 ampoule/day, 2 ampoule/day above 15kg, and injected with 1 and 10 numbers.
Anti-emetic drugs: For severe vomiting, 0.3-2ml of emolol or metoprolol can be intramuscularly.
Anti-shock: For those with obvious symptoms of shock, 5-15 mg of dexamethasone (flumethasone) or 0.3-1ml of anisopamine hydrochloride injection can be injected into intramuscularly.
Strengthen care: Pay attention to keeping your dog warm, stop feeding high-protein and high-fat feed such as milk, eggs, meat, etc. during diarrhea, and give easy-to-digestible feed to improve the cure rate.
